Four claws dropped to the coal black ground. Dana looked around to find the source of the foul odor filling her nostrils. Demons reeked. Death, skunk juice, methane gas and rotting flesh with just a hint of gym socks seemed to be the signature funk of the three she'd killed the last two nights. She never imagined anything so grotesque and slimy when she lived on Earth. Those fainting memories seemed so long ago.
Her skin felt warm. Peace engulfed her heart. Training would be over soon, but she had to vanquish this last monster. They were cunning, devious little beings. Much faster than they appeared, stronger than they revealed and slicker than she cared to admit. The eight fisted imp she killed didn't look like the name implied. She thought imps would be pint-sized nippy little sprites turned evil. This beast stood ten feet tall, fangs the size of an iPhone with an odor and breath that made rotten eggs smell like roses.
Bass pounded in her ears. The demon emitting the Eau de Hades had to be close if she could hear him. They didn't have hearts but the liquid in their bodies coursed through them so fast it sounded like a pulse. Gideon dropped them off with another angel. Akiva stood only a few inches taller than Dana. Throughout the week, he taught her to use the swords sheathed in an "X" across her back.
Grrrr. Heat permeated from her left. Dana pulled the flail from her hip. "Show yourself."
"Go home, little girl." The odor magnified as green gunk dripped to the ground. Hiss. Each drop of liquid from the demon's mouth produced steam. It's massive chest and back expanded and retracted with each nauseating breath.
"Don't they make mints in hell. My goodness." Dana sighed.
"Fine." It growled. Without warning, it started toward her on all fours.
Now at her eye level, Dana placed the flail in it's resting place on her hip. She swung her foot around and cracked the top of the demon's forehead with the row of spikes on her five-inch wedges. Green liquid oozed from the spot and sizzled as the demon's right eye melted shut.
"Arggh." It drew up to a standing position. The back of it's left claw caught Dana across the torso flinging her back ten foot.
Suspended in the air, she found her balance.
Surprised by her ability to control her body off the ground, Dana sneered. She ran on the air and turned into a full double side cartwheel striking the demon across the forehead and cheeks.
"Ayyyyyy." The demon grabbed it's face and writhed in pain.
Dana took the moment to kick in the middle of it's massive chest. It's chest caved in, and worms burst through its skin. Disgusted, Dana stumbled back and gasped. She extracted the swords from their sheaths, took a running start and turned into the first slash of the demon's head with her left hand and spun around to finish the cut without interruption with the sword in her right hand. Both blades thrust through the middle of what appeared to be his stomach.
Worms stopped pouring to the ground as green slime, and black smoke rose from the wounds. The ground shook, and a tar pit pulled the body parts of the demon into a funnel. Smoke dissipated and the remainder of the demon's body disintegrated.
Sweat poured down Dana's head. She dared not resheath her weapons until she cleaned them with the special cloth connected to her waist that Akiva told her would purify them for her work.
A large column of clouds to her left glowed. Dana smiled. Whenever the special glowing cloud appeared she returned to the angelic realm and reunited with her sisters. Training on this level almost completed.
